Why your homepage is losing customers (and how to fix it)

Most teams don’t realize how much damage their homepage is doing - until the numbers start slipping.

Leads dry up. Bounce rates creep higher. Users land, scroll, and vanish. You fix the bugs, tweak the headline, move things around... but nothing really changes.

1. Your value prop is buried—or missing

Within 5 seconds of landing on your homepage, users should know:

  • What you do

  • Who it’s for

  • Why it’s better

If your hero section says things like “Reimagining the digital future” or “We empower creators to thrive,” no one’s going to stick around to decode it.

Fix it:
Lead with benefits, not buzzwords. Be direct. Be specific.
Instead of: “Tools for modern teams,”
Say: “A project management app that helps remote teams hit deadlines faster.”

2. You’re showcasing too much, too soon

It’s tempting to cram everything onto the homepage—features, testimonials, awards, a timeline, pricing, FAQs...

But users don’t need to see everything up front. They need just enough to feel intrigued, confident, and clear on what to do next.

Fix it:
Focus the homepage on what matters most. One strong message. One action. Strip away distractions. Push deeper info to subpages.

The best homepages don’t answer every question. They spark just enough curiosity to click again.

3. You’re not guiding the user

You might assume users will know where to click next. But in reality, most will scroll aimlessly or bounce unless there’s a clear, intentional path forward.

Fix it:
Give them a route. Add CTAs at natural points in the scroll. Use section titles that lead somewhere. Think of your homepage like a conversation - don’t let it trail off.

Some things that help:

  • A clear call to action above the fold

  • Buttons that explain what happens next

  • Visual cues that guide the eye down

4. The design doesn’t build trust

Your product might be excellent. Your team might be world-class. But if your homepage looks DIY, slow, or dated—your visitors will assume your offering is too.

Fix it:
Invest in visual consistency, fast load times, and polished interactions. You don’t need wild animations—just a thoughtful layout, strong type, and mobile-first execution.

Don’t forget the fundamentals:

  • Crisp logos and images

  • Social proof that’s actually readable

  • Layouts that feel intentional, not crammed together

5. You’re designing for you—not for them

Sometimes the homepage becomes a dumping ground for internal priorities. Stakeholders want their feature, award, or press mention above the fold. The result? A disjointed page that’s all about the company—and not about the user.

Fix it:
Shift perspective. Ask: What’s the first question a potential customer has? What’s their hesitation? What would build their confidence right now?

Design from that place—not from a list of internal talking points.

Your homepage is your first impression - and you don’t get a second one. It should be clear, focused, and built with intent.
